The problem

The problem

Children are growing disconnected from nature and its life sustaining participants: pollinators and decomposers. Often perceived as pests, they are excluded from childrens environments.

Our solution

Our solution

IKO reimagines the playground as a living cycle. Through open-ended modules inspired by flowers, pollinators and decomposers, children are free to build, transform and reinterpret their environment while exploring the roles these organisms play within nature.

The life cycle of IKO mimics the life cycle present in nature. It aims to reframe planned obsolescence, from a linear system rapidly generating waste, into a cycle of birth and rebirth - from cradle to cradle.

The yearly cycle of our product would include children from the very start, with nature and co-creation workshops, that would feature new designs each year. Which would then be produced and used, before the elements inevitably return to soil, the playground slowly becoming part of the ecosystem surrounding it.
